How Chiggers Feed and Why It Matters

Chiggers may be nearly invisible, but the discomfort they cause is impossible to ignore. These tiny mites are common in warm, grassy, or wooded areas and are notorious for leaving behind intensely itchy red welts. But what exactly happens when a chigger bites, and why should homeowners care about how they feed?

In this article, we’ll break down how chiggers feed, why it causes such extreme skin irritation, and what you can do to protect yourself and your property.

What Are Chiggers, Exactly?

Chiggers are the larval stage of a type of mite known as Trombiculidae. You can’t usually see them with the naked eye—they’re bright red and smaller than 1/150th of an inch. While adult mites don’t bite humans, the larval form does. And unlike ticks or mosquitoes, chiggers don’t suck blood—they feed in a much different (and frankly, more irritating) way.

How Chiggers Feed

When a chigger finds its way onto your skin, it doesn’t burrow like many people believe. Instead, it uses specialized mouthparts called chelicerae to break through the skin’s surface.

Here’s what happens:

  • The chigger injects digestive enzymes into your skin.

  • These enzymes break down skin cells, effectively liquefying them.

  • The chigger then feeds on this liquified tissue through a tube-like structure called a stylostome.

The feeding process can last several hours if undisturbed, and the longer the chigger feeds, the deeper and more inflamed the stylostome becomes. That’s what causes the telltale itchy welts that can linger for days.

Why Their Feeding Matters

While chiggers don’t spread diseases in the U.S., their feeding method creates intense localized inflammation. The skin reacts not to the bite itself, but to the enzymes and stylostome left behind.

That’s why:

  • You may not feel a chigger bite right away

  • The itching usually starts several hours later

  • Scratching can make the irritation worse and even lead to secondary infections

Understanding their feeding process helps homeowners know why fast action matters—not just to ease symptoms but to prevent repeat infestations.

Where You’re Most Likely to Pick Them Up

Chiggers prefer moist, shady, and grassy environments. Common hotspots around the home include:

  • Tall grass and unkempt lawns

  • Weedy garden edges

  • Mulch beds and flower borders

  • Areas around patios, woodpiles, or sheds

Walking through these areas in shorts or sandals is an open invitation for chiggers to latch on. They typically crawl to the thinnest, most tender parts of the skin—like ankles, behind knees, waistlines, or underarms.

How to Prevent Chigger Bites

Avoiding bites starts with limiting exposure and taking quick precautions after spending time outdoors. Here are a few effective tips:

  • Wear long sleeves, pants, and tall socks when working in brushy or grassy areas

  • Tuck pants into socks or boots to limit skin access

  • Use EPA-approved insect repellents on shoes, socks, and exposed skin

  • Shower and change clothes immediately after being outside

  • Keep your lawn trimmed and edges well-maintained

But if chigger populations are high or recurring, DIY prevention may not be enough.
