What to Do After a Chigger-Infested Hike

Chiggers—those nearly invisible red mites found in tall grasses, weeds, and wooded areas—can turn a peaceful hike into an itchy nightmare. While they don’t transmit diseases in the U.S., their bites can cause severe itching and discomfort for days. Knowing what to do right after exposure can help you minimize irritation and avoid bringing these pests into your home.

Step 1: Shower Immediately

The faster you act, the better. As soon as you get home, remove all your clothing and place it directly into the washing machine. Then, take a hot shower with soap, scrubbing all over, especially around common chigger bite areas such as your ankles, waistline, armpits, and behind the knees.

Clothing and gear should be washed in hot water and dried on high heat to ensure any remaining mites are eliminated.

Step 2: Treat the Itch

Chiggers inject saliva that causes skin irritation long after they’ve gone. To manage discomfort:

  • Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion

  • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling

  • Take oral antihistamines to reduce allergic response

  • Avoid scratching to prevent secondary infection

Remember—chiggers do not burrow into your skin, so there’s no need for home remedies aimed at “removing” them.

Step 3: Watch for Infection

Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter. Signs of infection include redness spreading from the bite site, swelling, pus, or increased pain. If you notice these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional promptly.

Step 4: Check Pets and Gear

If your dog joined you on the hike, they may have chiggers, too. Inspect their belly, ears, and between toes. Bathe them with pet-safe shampoo and talk to your veterinarian about preventative treatments.

Gear such as backpacks and blankets should be cleaned thoroughly before storage to ensure no pests remain.

Step 5: Prevent Future Encounters

While chiggers are most active from late spring through early fall, prevention can make a big difference:

  • Stick to well-maintained trails

  • Wear long sleeves and pants tucked into socks

  • Apply insect repellents with DEET to skin and permethrin to clothing

  • Keep your lawn mowed and weeds under control
