Your June Pest Checklist
June is when pest season across Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama stops warming up and starts performing. Mosquitoes are peaking, ants are foraging at full strength, wasp and hornet nests are growing by the week, and the summer heat is pushing roaches and spiders to be more visible. The good news: one focused walk-through this month sets up the whole season. Here’s the checklist, zone by zone.
Zone one: water and drainage
Mosquitoes top the June priority list, and water is their whole story. After each rain — and at least weekly — handle these:
- Tip out plant saucers, buckets, toys, and anything else holding rainwater
- Refresh birdbaths and outdoor pet bowls instead of topping them off
- Clear gutters and confirm downspouts drain away from the house
- Check tarps, covers, and kiddie pools for standing water
- Note any low spots in the lawn that hold puddles for days
Ten minutes here does more to reduce mosquitoes than any gadget on the market.
Zone two: lawn and landscape edges
The shady, humid margins of the yard are where ticks, fleas, and chiggers concentrate. Keep grass mowed and edges trimmed, especially where the lawn meets woods or fence lines. Clear leaf litter and brush piles from the areas your family uses, and keep shrubs near patios pruned and opened up — that same dense shade doubles as daytime resting habitat for mosquitoes. If your yard backs up to woods, a dry border of wood chips or gravel along the tree line discourages ticks from crossing into the lawn.
Zone three: eaves, decks, and play areas
Early June nests are small nests, and small is exactly how you want to find them. Walk the house and scan under eaves, deck rails and framing, grill carts, mailboxes, and playsets for paper wasp combs — golf-ball size right now — and watch shrubs and trees for the gray, enclosed beginnings of hornet nests. Check the lawn for focused, low flight traffic in and out of a single spot, which can mark a yellow jacket colony underground. Found something already established? That’s a job to hand off rather than climb toward.
Zone four: kitchen and entry points
Summer ant trails and roach sightings both trace back to food, moisture, and easy entry. Store sweets, cereals, and pet food in sealed containers, wipe counters and sweep regularly, and keep the trash on a steady schedule. Fix dripping faucets and dry the sink overnight. Outside, caulk gaps around windows, doors, and plumbing penetrations, make sure door sweeps actually touch the threshold, and pull mulch back a few inches from the foundation — it’s a favorite travel corridor for ants and the bigger roaches that wander in from outdoors.
Zone five: garage, storage, and quiet corners
June is prime time to reorganize the garage or shed, so do it with spiders in mind. Wear gloves when reaching into boxes, woodpiles, and meter boxes, shake out gear that lives outside, and knock down webs in undisturbed corners. Storing boxes on shelves rather than stacked on the floor removes the dark, still spaces black widows and other spiders prefer. While you’re out there, check the garage door’s bottom seal — daylight showing under a closed door is an open invitation for crickets, roaches, and everything else that patrols the driveway at night.
